THE PROJECT

SiPHÀ was born from decades of hands-on research on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) carried out at the Department of Chemistry at Sapienza University of Rome.

The idea of founding an innovative start-up grew out of a desire to bring years of scientific research into real-world application, after the development and patenting of an innovative technology that, for the first time, enables the production of PHA from mixed microbial cultures through a fully continuous process.
This method not only simplifies PHA production itself but also drastically improves cost-effectiveness.

The combination between this innovative approach and the possibility to turn organic waste into high-value products marks a true revolution  in the bioplastics sector, making PHA production more sustainable not just environmentally, but also economically and technically.

SiPHÀ is committed to expanding access to biopolymers, offering scalable solutions that actively support a more efficient circular economy.

MISSION

Our mission is the large-scale diffusion of the technology developed in the laboratory, with the aim of reducing costs and facilitating the operational approach from a technological point of view, for the production of PHA. Continuous processes, in fact, offer significant advantages in terms of efficiency, since they allow a reduction in the volumes of equipment (such as peristaltic pumps and reactors) at the same productivity. This means that the same amount of final product can be obtained per day, reducing the need for space and resources, with a positive impact on operating costs and energy used. With this approach, which uses mixed cultures and a continuous process, we aim to make PHA production more economical, sustainable and scalable, accelerating the transition towards a more circular and environmentally friendly future.
